The construction of CORE Butte’s sports complex has been in progress since March 17th of 2024. It is nearing completion and can be expected to be done by mid-September.
The sports complex has been designed specifically to be inclusive of all sports currently offered at CORE Butte. While it does not explicitly allow for the introduction of new sports, it will support all existing outdoor sports on our own campus. According to Principal Matt Harvey, “It’s really about control.” Having a sports complex on campus allows our administration to have more flexibility in planning sporting events and practices for our students.
In the past, issues have arisen when scheduling practices and games at other schools. There have been reports of confusion for practice location, the hosting schools not being cooperative, and practices not starting until late into the evening. According to Mrs. Stephanie Haas, when our sporting events are held on other campuses, “we are at the mercy of that school or group.”
Moreover, by hosting our own sporting events, we can draw in more money for our athletics programs. These funds may be used to pay for sports officials, necessary equipment, as well as some “fun things,” Mrs. Haas said.
With the introduction of our own sports complex, we can now host home games on campus. This opens a window to improve campus culture and student participation, as well as provide relief for the athletes who no longer have to miss as much class to make it on time for a sporting event. “I feel like it will make a lot of things easier,” said CORE Senior and Track and Field athlete Karisa Walborn.
The lead finisher for the project, Mike Baker, said this has been one of the better worksites he has worked on. But that should certainly not diminish how much effort has gone into it by our staff and the construction crew.
