The CORE Butte Lynx took on the Burney Raiders at home in an intense volleyball matchup. Both JV and varsity teams battled hard. Burney’s JV team took the win, but CORE Butte’s varsity team came back strong and swept Burney.
The Burney JV team won in two sets, scoring 25-13 and 25-19. CORE Butte called a timeout at 13-19, trying to rally back, but Burney held their lead to finish it off. Since it’s best out of three, there was no third set.
Now for the varsity game, which was best 3 out of 5 for the win. The Lynx had 12 players, while Burney had 9. In the first set, CORE Butte started strong, seeing crazy kills by Apple Bolton, going 3-6 early on. Karisa Walborn had some amazing blocks, helping the Lynx stay up 22-12 before finishing the set 25-13.
In the second set, both teams traded points early, tied 4-4, until the Lynx started pulling ahead 10-5. Burney called a timeout, but CORE Butte kept their momentum, leading 15-7 and later 22-15. After another timeout from Burney, the CORE Butte girls closed it out 25-22.
The third and final set started with Burney jumping ahead 2-0, but CORE Butte quickly turned it around, taking the lead 6-2, then 10-5. The team showed great teamwork, with passes and hits landing exactly where they wanted. Up 12-5, Burney called another timeout, but the Lynx doubled their score to 22-11 and eventually won the match 25-12.
After the game, Karisa Walborn said, “I feel like for JV that was a little bit of a struggle, I know they could do better. For varsity, we did good, but energy was low. We needed to do better on defense by keeping the short balls up.”
