The Music Studio class is taught and guided by Nathan Collins. Mr Collins describes it as a fun and free-flowing class, one that is not about being perfect, but rather, is about enjoying making music with your friends. “Music is a very joyful thing,” Mr Collins said, adding that he loves seeing the students progress with their musical skills.
The class doesn’t work according to your normal curriculum. Instead of having students sit in the classroom and listen to the teacher lecture, they split up into five or six bands with four or five people per band.
CORE insider interviewed several students from different bands, and each of them seemed to love the class. Though there is some bickering between the bandmates, they all seem to work together in the end.
Each band usually splits up into separate classrooms in the area so that each band can get some good practice in simultaneously. However, even with this separation, it is still very loud, and student Kyle Kambourian even says “it’s chaos.”
Many students bring their own instruments, but there are some, such as drums or piano, that simply can’t be carried around all day, and are provided by the class. There are also some guitars and smaller instruments that the students can borrow during class time if they can’t buy their own (even though it is recommended).
The bands’ next performance will be on November 5th, at noon.
