There are a lot of things you could be doing on a monday morning; liking your crush’s new Instagram post, catching up on which celebrity had an affair, or even scrolling lukewarm Tik-Toks. With all of this competition for just a few hours, your time is a valuable resource. So, is willingly going to school for an extra few hours a week worth your time?
Almost every Monday, starting at nine in the morning, students are invited to attend Flex Time, where they can seek help with schoolwork from their teachers for a dedicated two hour time slot. Two whole hours of time where you can bug your favorite, or least favorite, teacher for help. Both teachers and successful students alike frequently talk about how valuable a resource Flex Time is. But, is it truly worth your time?
Flex Time has a strict, and honestly quite boring, format where students sign in with their homeroom teacher, before going to any classroom where they need help understanding a concept. Students who are struggling to understand a concept, or who have neglected one too many Math assignments, are encouraged to attend Flex Time. Although it seems both tiresome and ‘a major bummer’, attending Flex Time can truly help you in understanding a concept. When I attended Flex Time recently, hopelessly juggling the endless complexities of polynomials, I rushed over to my Mathematics teacher for help. It was the best thing that I could have done. Not only did the numbers stop swimming in my head, but I also started to build an understanding of what the numbers meant.
Students who are not in need of urgent help with school may be tempted to dismiss Flex Time and get back to catching up on some sweet, sweet gossip, but that would be a mistake. Flex Time gives students a space where they can work on any schoolwork in a helpful and scholarly environment. Trust me I’ve been there: being able to access a more formal environment can mean all the difference for students that struggle to focus on their schoolwork.
Once the two hour time slot ends for Flex Time, it would seem sensible to just head straight home and take a half an hour of relaxation that inevitably becomes two hours. However, there are much more enjoyable events after the academic portion of the morning. From fun student activities, to impromptu shenanigans, Flex Time can be a blast for socially minded students.
All things considered, students who wish to go the extra mile, or who simply want a fun time that involves significantly less screen time, will find Flex Time well worth their time.
