Have you ever woken up and felt like you aren’t getting enough sleep because you have to wake up for school in the morning and get ready? School for most students starts at 9 A.M. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which means to get the full 8 hours of sleep a student should be getting you would need to go to sleep at 11 P.M. if you wish to wake up at 7 A.M. A ton of students struggle to get enough sleep to stay energized throughout the school day.
CORE student Bryson Cantalupo believes that school should start later because “Highschoolers tend to stay up later at night so if school starts later then students would get more sleep.” This point has value to it because students would be allowed to sleep in longer and get their intended sleep hours. Another CORE student, Josef Day, said, “I think school should start later because students think better later in the day.” This is another point that makes sense since some students think better in the middle of the day, but also a lot of students get tired later in the day. Student Simon McNamar has a similar thought process as Bryson Cantalupo, saying that “School should start later. Because I don’t get enough sleep already, which makes my brain not work.” This shows that students are struggling to get the intended amount of sleep, and making school start later lets students get the chance to sleep longer.
Some CORE students also believe that school is fine as it is, with classes starting at 9 AM, or believe that classes should start even earlier. Student Wyatt Sampietro believes that school should start earlier. This is because every other school in Chico tends to start around 8:30 AM, if not 8 AM on most days. A lot of students came from Chico High School or PV, so having classes starting at 9 may be unique for them. Student Henry Barron believes that “Some people would want school to start earlier or at the same time so that school can just be over earlier in the day.” This supports another opinion I heard that people would want school to start earlier so that it ends earlier. If school ends earlier, then you have more of the evening to have time for homework, yourself, and getting sleep.
Students have mixed feelings about whether or not school should start later, at the same time, or sooner. All different opinions have their pros and cons on why it should start at the preferred time.
