It’s no secret that the city of Chico is getting its own aquatic center, but what are secrets are the challenges of construction, the behind-the-scenes logistics, and the budget. After interviewing Brandon Slater, the President of Slater & Son Construction, CORE Insider gained an inside scoop on the current progress and what the community can look forward to once the project is completed in Fall 2026.
The 50-meter and warm-up pools have already been dug and, according to Slater, the current focus is on the foundation and the plumbing for the concession stand and bathrooms, as well as digging the recreational pool.
Slater emphasizes that the waterpark will bring economic development to the community in many ways. For instance, CEOs and other people who start businesses may find Chico a much better place to live because it has the “Best swimming place north of Sacramento.” This, along with families traveling to enjoy it and spending money in our town, will make a big impact on our city’s economy.

One unique feature to look forward to when this park opens is the giant tower with the ‘High Fly Slide,’ which has a steep drop and a ramp at the end that launches you up into the air. This sort of slide is a one-of-a-kind for Northern California and should serve as an attraction for many.
The challenges Slater and his team face are no walk in the park. With this being the first time the company has built an aquatic center, the project is a massive undertaking. One factor that may lead to a later completion date is the pool itself, which will be made in Italy. “There’s a decent chance that it’s not there for us when we’re ready for it,” Slater said.” It could potentially delay the finish.” Plus, once it starts raining, the project could enter a cycle of “constant dewatering.” “No plans are perfect,” Slater added.
Overall, this project is heading in a positive direction. Many people anticipate Chico’s next big attraction, and from Brandon’s comments, it’s clear there’s a good reason to.
