CORE Insider Hosted Its First Halloween Costume Contest!: Here’s How it Went

On Thursday, October 30th, the CORE Insider held its first-ever Halloween Costume Contest during lunch outside the Common Area. The event marked the Insider’s debut as an on-campus event organizer, which drew in hundreds of students and staff.

MC’d by journalism advisor Mr. Emiliano “Mr. E” Garcia-Sarnoff, the contest featured 32 participants in total. Each contestant took a moment in front of the crowd to show off their costume while being introduced by Mr. E, followed by applause and cheers from the audience. Photos were taken of every participant (see the gallery below), and judges narrowed the field to final picks in four categories: Overall Best, Funniest, Scariest, and Staff.

Voting took place online through this very website, and members of the CORE community could cast their ballots. Polls stayed open over the weekend and officially closed on Tuesday, November 4th, at 11:11 a.m., 11 minutes after homeroom period started, leaving some time for last-minute votes. Some contestants even asked their close friends and family to vote for them, adding a bit of playful competition to the mix.

In the Overall Best category, Cora Arvonen’s costume as The Onceler took first place with 72 votes, followed by Mona Hendriks in second as “Something Ren” with 36 votes, and Eli and Ella in third as the Subway Surfers with 31 votes.

.

For the Funniest Category, Austin Patane’s Lorax Costume was a clear favorite, earning 136 votes, the highest total across all                                                           categories.

.

Noah Long’s eerie plague doctor won the Scariest Costume category with 65 votes.

And in the Staff Category, the CORE Admin Team took the win with 113 votes, dressed as characters from the classic board game Guess Who?, despite not having the best start.

The contest brought together the wider community in support of student fun and school spirit, which is the real win. With strong turnout, hundreds of votes, and plenty of applause, the CORE Insider’s first event was a resounding success, and a good sign of more to come.
