Starfield recently had its biggest update back on the 7th, bringing in plenty of new content and a new DLC, adding so much more gameplay. But is the game finally good after three years?
Back in 2023, Bethesda Game Studios released their newest game, Starfield, a game with a whole new universe to explore. It was advertised as a game that could possibly rival No Man’s Sky, a game with infinite exploration. But when Starfield finally released, it felt like every other recent Bethesda game — wide as the ocean and as deep as a puddle.
While I personally enjoyed playing the game on release, I enjoy most games I play, with the only ones I dislike being those with very little gameplay. One complaint I did have was that every follower you get in the main story was bland, and New Game Plus — something that lets you restart the game while keeping all character upgrades — didn’t let you keep your items. But with free lanes, one of those issues has been fixed.
The update added a few things, like the ability to fly to planets without loading screens, new items, better points of interest, and a storage system to keep your items in your next NG+.
What I was really interested in, though, was what was added with the new DLC, Terran Armada. While the DLC is similar to the main game, with missions mostly being go to a place, fight, get an item, talk, and repeat, I was more interested in one specific addition: a mansion built into an asteroid.
I was instantly drawn to getting that house, so I spent the first 10 or so hours of playing trying to get a ship capable of reaching where you can buy it, only to find out the house costs five million credits (the in-game currency), and I only had about half a million. That led to the start of my journey of making money any way possible.
Most of that time was spent doing missions on bounty boards around settlements, but those only gave around five thousand credits per job, and I didn’t want to grind those. So I decided to try something that would make more: piracy. While being a space pirate did pay a lot, I usually lost most of it paying off bounties or getting caught smuggling, so that idea didn’t work out.
That led to my next plan: making items on a random planet and selling them. While that has been working better, it still takes a long time. Because of that, I think that while Starfield is now a slightly better game, it is still a grind to make money or gain anything beyond weapons dropped by enemies.
In the end, I believe Starfield is a good game if you’ve enjoyed other recent Bethesda games like Fallout 4 or Skyrim, and both DLCs are worth it if you already enjoy the main game.
