CORE Butte’s softball team secured its first win of the season on May 6th, defeating Redding Christian 14-12 in a conference away game.
The Lynx scored early with a seven-run second inning and finished with 18 hits, their highest offensive output of the season. They added runs in five different innings and held off multiple Redding Christian rallies to close out the win.
Junior Mara Gonzalez led this offense, going 3-for-4 with a triple and scoring twice while also pitching 6.2 innings in the circle. Sophomore Jody Beckley added three hits and two RBIs. Senior Zoe Newton finished with two hits, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Senior Emma Bowles also scored three runs, and freshman Layla Chapman contributed two hits and an RBI.
Senior Hazel England drove in three runs on a key hit, and junior Faith Rash added two hits and an RBI. Freshman Janisia Olivo recorded two hits, and sophomore Eva Olivo added an RBI.
Redding Christian responded throughout the game, scoring in five innings and cutting the lead to two runs late, but CORE Butte held on defensively to secure the victory.
The win improves CORE Butte to 1-18 overall and 1-7 in league play, breaking their 18-game losing streak! This marks a turning point after a difficult start to the season and avenging an earlier loss to Redding Christian.
