No longer willing to stay silent to the injustices happening in Nepal, Gen Z marches in protest against the government. Along with the corruption and misuse of the nation’s wealth, the government had recently banned 26 social media platforms. This act served as the last straw for the young people of the nation. Using Discord as a platform for planning and nominating officials, the youth of Nepal discussed tactics about how they would protest this new ban, and distributed instructions for making fire-starting devices.
On September 8, a large crowd of Gen Z protesters gathered at Maitighar Mandala, a huge traffic island in Nepal. The protests soon became violent, with some protestors attempting to breach security. The protesters were not left unnoticed, as their attempts were met with tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition by the police. In response, the protestors set Parliament and other government buildings ablaze the next day. Seeing the response, the government of Nepal lifted the social media ban, but this change in policy did not matter, as the protests were already in full throttle, with Gen Z protestors setting fire to more government buildings and officials’ houses.

Chaos and violence reigned. As of September 10, 13,500 inmates had escaped from prisons nationwide due to the buildings being attacked or set on fire. On September 13, things had finally calmed down but the toll this attack had taken on the country was imminent. By the end 72 people were killed in the protests, including protestors, police officers, prisoners, and citizens while 2,113 were injured. A day of national mourning for those lost in the protest was held on September 17, 2025. However, trauma and anger still lingers among the nation as they will always remember how Gen Z brought down the government in 48 hours.
