The 2025 Game of the Year awards happened last week on December 11th. This is the “Oscars” for Gamers. There were many new games announced, the awards happened, and Ms. Piggy was there too, for some reason.
The biggest winner of the night was “Clair Obscure: Expedition 33”, which won nine
][awards, including Best Indie Game, Best Art Direction, Best Debut Indie Game and Best Score, Best RPG, Best Narrative, Best Game Direction, and the biggest one of all, Game of The Year. This broke the record for the most awards given in one show, a record once held by The Last of Us – Part II.
“Clair Obscure: Expedition 33” sweeping the major categories is most interesting, as they seemed to have multiple things going against them. The makers of the game are former Ubisoft employees, they learned how to make games largely from YouTube tutorials, and they are French–not one of the world’s video gaming centers.
As for the big game announcements, we learned that a new “Knights of The Old Republic” game is being worked on; the first game in the series is almost 22 years old. Along with this announcement, a second new Star Wars game was revealed, a pod-racing game developed by the same studio behind “Burnout” and “Need for Speed.”
But one of the biggest announcements concerned the game whose developers, Larian Studios, placed a whole statue in the desert to tease its release, “Divinity.” an upcoming game developed by the same studio behind “Baldur’s Gate 3.” According to Larian Studios, the producers thereof, “Divinity” will be bigger than “Baldur’s Gate 3,” which is certainly something to go for, but seeing as “Baldur’s Gate” took six whole years to finish development, Divinity might then take even longer
Two “Tomb Raider” games were also announced, one being a new story, and the other being a remake of the original game. A release date was finally announced for the upcoming “LEGO Batman” game. A new “Dungeons & Dragons” game, “Warlock,” was also announced, an open-world third-person. A big difference between “Warlock” and the last DND video game, “Baldur’s Gate 3,” is that no gameplay has been shown yet. The developers are aiming for a 2027 release date. Another new “Total War” game was announced, Based in the “Warhammer 40k” universe featuring David Harbor.
