Princesses and maidens, pirates and princes crowded together to watch with excitement as brave volunteers mounted their mighty steeds. Looks of determination crossed the faces of the participants as they looked to their friends in the crowd for encouragement. “GO!” The instructor shouted, and they were off, their horses’ manes blowing in the wind as they raced down the sidewalk. The two horse riders were closely tied, their skills almost entirely matched. Finally, in the final stretch, one of the mighty riders pulled through first, and the crowd went wild!
On February 5, the middle school students of CORE Butte gathered for the Medieval Times Fest. They competed in tournaments representing the six houses: the Roaring Lion, the Wolf, Larry (the Stags), the Bear, the Dragon, and the Falcon. According to Mrs. Ruby, “It’s really fun to have our middle schoolers out here competing and building community.”

Laughter and smiles filled the area as students took part in activities such as jousting races, archery, Breach the Wall, catapult challenges, and, of course, the great entertainment of the court jester, Mr. Scherba. When asked about their favorite parts of the event, two princesses said they enjoyed “the games” and the “food” the most. By the end of the day, the team that ultimately ended up winning was The House of the Falcon!
