Steering scion to a realization of such contours, crags and carbuncles pursuant of especial quintessence presupposes a farrago of moil, remuneration languishing in arrears, properly enough concomitant to profound disillusionment, and a pathetic douceur of the occasional sensibility of pygmalion enamoration. Wherefore lovers’ ubiquitous desideration of spawn, evinced by an inclemently burgeoning population? For though the quotidian jeremiads of the burthens of rearing issue from every quarter, yet at least one party to the requisite intromission must maintain a devotion to the mission for a goodly while, as a protracted interregnum ‘twixt having first substantively set upon the task, and consummation, wherein seemingly nothing is garnered but an evanescent pleasure, must surely be trooped through by only the veracious votaries of the prospectus, actuated by a stolid adherence to principles whereof.
How are we to reconcile the antipodal duplicity of dispositions and sentiments of the ménage subsisting ante/postgestatio? It cannot be that panglossian prolepses inveighled them, for, as I just noted, the plangeant rattles of those thus fettered ineluctably irrumate the ingenuous yearnings of precocious shoots adventitiously grafting onto that which they fancy shall elicit vestigial graft pursuant of a mindless propagation whence a welter of contretemps agglomerate unto demotic insupportable insupporability, which must certainly deracinate from mortification.
Inasmuch as they are surfeited of harrowing forebodings, notwithstanding, do they feel it an over-riding duty. This too is untenable, for children demonstrably worsen the aggregate joie de vivre, particularly for those of the first degree, viz. those who afflicted themselves, though we shall collectively pay an indemnity, as the ramifications present themselves flagrante delicto in a chimera of declensions; already the presagements are patent. I cannot conceive any but the most preternaturally daft or malevolent would, appreciating this, stick fast to such a course bereft of a paramount inducement.
Hence, I am left with but two plausible exigencies: the indiscriminate clinging to mere tradition, without the slightest cogitation upon merit ascribed whereof; or the uxorious acquiescence to atavistic proclivities, though not of carnal varieties, for it is inconceivable such parochial delectations could decisively entice any but the most licentious of rakes and demireps, who tend to sufficiently brook against sproutings anyhow.
This duly acceded, an appraisal of virtue must descry but one of the following duad, if forsooth they can rightly be distinguished as such: sedulity which bids defiance against unremitting and assured flagellation, or alacritous assumption of all that which nature commissions.
If any parents cares to heed this importunate accoutrings of Caliban’s mirror, whither I imagine they are loath to open an interstice, to let its rays of revelation illumine, I would prescribe an ex post facto rectification of the execrable error of dissemination; infants and adolescents can facilely be overpowered, and teenagers are wont to maunder about somnolently. Vae Victus!

If this article was meant to be a joke I apologize, but what happens if we played this argument out….we would not have the human species. Plus if you choose to never do anything hard and choose only to do shallow and unrewarding things…What is the point?
(Also I would like to see these “studies” I’ve heard quite the contrary before)
And that picture is pretty graphic especially considering the article.

Hi Steiger!
This was a satirical article from Sam’s ongoing column, but I’m having difficulty seeing where you’re finding an argument. From what I understand (which is a feat of itself), Sam is asking why people continue to have children despite it being a difficult and expensive task. I think the same is interesting, why DO people have kids when it’s arguably one of the most exhausting jobs you can undertake as an individual, especially where we live, that you are expected to be responsible for your offspring until the age of eighteen? It requires immense perseverance, research, and drive to raise a child, much less raise a child well, which is what makes it fascinating that people do so so often in a world that seems to value hard work less and less.
As for the image he put as the cover, that is Saturn from Greek mythology eating his kid, which I believe is a nod to Sam’s closing paragraph, where he jokingly suggests that parents who are ready to give up the task of raising their children should “correct their mistake”, or kill them. lol
