CORE Butte track and field competed on Mar. 13 at their second meet of the season, the Black Butte Invitational at Orland High School, and made another strong performance against a large field of teams.
The boys’ distance runners again led the way on the track. Junior Samuel Boian placed third in the varsity 800 meters in a personal-best 2:11.58. Sophomore Luke Schooling followed in fourth at 2:18.49. Senior Brian Patton finished sixth-place in the varsity 1600 meters with a season-best 4:54.48, and Luke also scored there with his seventh-place finish in 5:03.15. In the junior varsity distance races, freshman Lance Tennis placed second in the 800 meters in 2:23.62 and later took fifth in the 1600 meters in 5:14.54, while freshman Zachary Trinca finished seventh in the JV 800 at 2:30.65 and 14th in the JV 1600 in 5:26.56, both personal bests.
CORE also found success in the relays. The varsity boys 4×400 relay team of Samuel Boian, Luke Schooling, Brian Patton, and senior Caleb Lezzeni placed second in 3:57.67. The junior varsity boys 4×400 relay team of sophomore Benjamin Feather, sophomore Joshua Iler, Lance Tennis, and Zachary Trinca took third in 4:01.74. The CORE Butte junior varsity 4×100 relay team of Jaxson Lea, Joshua Iler, sophomore Gavin McGarr, and Benjamin Feather added a fifth-place finish in 49.31.
In the sprints, junior Elijah Hastain represented CORE in the varsity boys races. He placed 19th in the 100 meters in 12.46 and 13th in the 200 meters in 25.82. In junior varsity competition, sophomore Jaxson Lea placed 15th in the 100 meters in a personal-best 12.86 and eighth in the 200 meters in another personal best of 26.88. Sophomore Joshua Iler finished fourth in the JV 110-meter hurdles in 18.31, and Benjamin Feather placed second in the JV 300-meter hurdles in 47.95. Freshmen Cody Martin and Max Rivera added 17th and 18th place in the JV 110 hurdles.
In the boys’ field events, junior Carsten Balint turned in a pair of top-10 varsity finishes. He placed 10th in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 17 feet, 6 inches, and matched that place in the triple jump with another personal best at 35 feet, 4 inches. Sophomore Gavin McGarr placed 17th in the JV long jump at 15 feet, 7 inches, then earned a third-place finish in the JV triple jump with a personal-best 36 feet, 7.5 inches. In the throws, senior Caleb Lezzeni finished 27th in varsity shot put at 28 feet, 0.5 inches, and also helped score in the varsity 4×400 relay. Sophomore Jaxson Lea led CORE Butte’s JV shot put group with a 12th-place mark of 35 feet, 7.5 inches.
On the girls side, senior Brianna Hayes delivered another standout meet for CORE Butte. She won the varsity 800 meters in 2:18.51 and later placed second in the varsity 1600 meters in 5:12.62. CORE also placed three more runners in the varsity 1600, with senior Katelyn Copper finishing 10th in 6:16.12, senior Amanda Mabie placing 11th in 6:18.90, and senior Eliana Feather taking 15th in a personal-best 6:37.75. Katelyn added another major result in the varsity 3200 meters, placing third in 13:41.22.
The CORE Butte girls were especially strong in the relays. The varsity girls 4×800 relay team of Katelyn Copper, senior Katelyn Merrick, Eliana Feather, and Amanda Mabie won in 11:19.82. The varsity girls 4×400 relay team of sophomore Serina Rogers, Katelyn Merrick, Amanda Mabie, and Brianna Hayes placed second in 4:35.08. Serina also contributed individually with a sixth-place finish in the JV 400 meters in 1:10.60 and a third-place finish in the JV 800 meters in a personal-best 2:59.16.
CORE Butte also produced strong sprint and jump performances from the girls. Junior Julia Spears placed fifth in the varsity 200 meters in a personal-best 28.07 and won the varsity long jump with a personal-best mark of 16 feet, 2.5 inches. Senior Karisa Walborn continued her strong season with a fifth-place finish in the varsity 100-meter hurdles in 19.12, sixth in the varsity long jump at 14 feet, 3.5 inches, 10th in the varsity high jump at 4 feet, 2 inches, and second in the varsity triple jump with a personal-best 32 feet. Junior Macey Layfield placed 27th in the varsity 100 meters in 16.15, 10th in varsity shot put with a personal-best 26 feet, 9 inches, and tied for 22nd in the varsity long jump at 11 feet.
In the girls junior varsity sprints, freshman Gabriella Jarvis placed seventh in the 100 meters in 14.41 and sixth in the 200 meters in 31.11. Sophomore Clover Bailey took 19th in the JV 100 meters in 14.94, and freshman Maggie Boian finished 26th in 15.19. Sophomore Emily Knoch added a 16th-place finish in the JV 800 meters in 3:23.22 and 29th in the JV long jump with a personal-best 10 feet, 7 inches.
In the girls throws and jumps at the junior varsity level. Sophomore Daisy Kammerer placed 11th in JV shot put with a personal-best 22 feet, 8 inches and eighth in JV discus with a personal-best 63 feet, 4 inches. Sophomore Taylee Aars finished 16th in JV shot put at 20 feet, 5.5 inches, eighth in JV long jump with a personal-best 13 feet, 10 inches, and third in the JV triple jump with a personal-best 28 feet, 7.5 inches. Freshman Brielle Balint placed 20th in JV discus at 45 feet, 4 inches, while freshman Emery Dyer finished 19th in the JV triple jump with a personal-best 22 feet, 5 inches.
CORE Butte continues their strong start to the season with their victories, relay medals, and several personal bests.
