The Sycamore Pool, part of the One-Mile Recreation Area, is a popular summer spot. However, this year, it has been reported to contain bacteria and multiple parasites in the water.
The Chico Enterprise-Record of Crime and Public Safety is advising the public not to swim and to keep their pets out of the infected water. According to the report, there have been two cases of children who became ill and were hospitalized after contact with the pool. Additional testing is still underway, so the exact threat level and amount of bacteria and parasites remain unknown. Warning signs have been posted around the pool to alert visitors.
Sycamore Pool is located near Bidwell Park, where many children play. This raises concern that children could wander into the water and become ill. Big Chico Creek flows through Sycamore Pool, making it part of the 46-mile water system. While further testing has not yet confirmed contamination beyond the pool, there is concern that bacteria or parasites could spread downstream.
Although the pool has not been fully closed, warning signs remain in place, and health risks persist. So stay out and keep out; the warnings are there to keep you safe.
