CORE’s varsity girls softball team traveled to Oroville on Tuesday, March 24, where they lost 20-1 in a game that started at 4:00 p.m and ended around 5:30 p.m.
The loss extends the team’s season-opening skid to four games, moving their record to 0-4. The result also marks a second consecutive loss to Oroville, after they lost to them 7-2 last year.
Oroville scored nine runs in the first inning and continued to build their momentum with 20 total runs on 10 hits. CORE struggled to slow the pace defensively and allowed consistent pressure throughout the game.
Despite this lopsided score, the CORE Butte softball team had some strong individual performances at the plate. Junior Faith Rash delivered a strong showing, going 1-for-1 with a triple. Senior Hazel England also stood out, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and the team’s only RBI (Run Batted In).
CORE Butte recorded three total hits in the game and scored their lone run in the third inning. The team drew two walks and struck out seven times against Oroville’s pitching.
In the circle, CORE split pitching duties between juniors Mara Gonzalez and Faith Rash. Mara pitched 2.1 innings, allowing six runs, and Faith threw 1.2 innings.
Defensively, the CORE Butte softball team finished with a .882 fielding percentage, only committing two errors.
The CORE Butte softball team will prepare for the Biggs Tournament next, scheduled for March 26-28; opponents are still to be determined.
