CORE Butte track and field played at the Durham Invitational at Butte College’s Cowan Stadium on Mar. 27. CORE athletes contributed across sprints, distance races, hurdles, relays, jumps, and throws.
On the boys’ side, the top varsity finish came in the 800 meters, where sophomore Luke Schooling placed third in 2:14.98. Luke also took third in the 1600 meters in 4:58.70. These were two of the team’s strongest varsity performances of the day.
The boys were also competitive in the quarter-mile and sprint events. Senior Brian Patton finished fourth in the varsity 400 meters in 54.31, and junior Samuel Boian followed in fifth at 56.35. Brian also placed fifth in the varsity 200 in 24.87, while junior Elijah Hastain ran a personal-best 25.10 to tie for seventh. Samuel added his 12th-place finish in the 200 at 26.09. In the varsity 100, Elijah led the team by placing 26th in 12.48, and junior Bradly Breevaart placed 37th in 13.91.
In relays, the varsity 4×400 relay team of Samuel, Elijah, Brian, and Luke placed third in 3:50.83. The JV 4×400 relay team of Benjamin Feather, Joshua Iler, Lance Tennis, and Austin Patane won its race in 4:10.94, and the JV 4×100 relay team of Jaxson Lea, Joshua, Gavin McGarr, and Benjamin placed third in 48.78.
In hurdles, Junior Carsten Balint took eighth in the varsity 110-meter hurdles in 19.48. In JV competition, sophomore Joshua placed second in the 110 hurdles in 18.15, freshman Cody Martin was seventh in 21.58, and freshman Max Rivera took ninth in 22.65. Ben added a runner-up finish in the JV 300 hurdles with 46.08.
In the field events, Carsten tied for fifth in varsity high jump by clearing 5-4 and later placed fifth in varsity triple jump at 36-8.5. Senior Caleb Lezzeni placed 17th in the varsity 200 in 28.19 and 29th in varsity shot put with a personal-best 30-6. Bradly earned a personal-best 80-1 in varsity discus for 23rd.
At the JV level, Jaxson placed 17th in the 100 in 12.85 and eighth in the 200 in 26.53. Lance was sixth in the 400 in 1:00.99 and third in the 800 in 2:29.31. Freshman Zachary Trinca took fourth in the 800 in 2:30.96 and third in the 1600 in 5:18.14. Freshman Josiah Haselton placed eighth in the 800 in 2:36.48 and 10th in the 1600 in 5:36.07.
Other JV contributors included Austin, who placed 25th in the 200 in 28.42 and 13th in the 400 in 1:04.82; Ethan Gulbrandsen, who was 27th in the 200 in 28.67 and ninth in the 400 in 1:02.51; Nathan Hernandez, who finished 48th in the 100 in 14.07, 33rd in the 200 in 29.38 and 15th in the 400 in 1:05.23; and Logan Lassonde, who finished 65th in the 100 in 17.69, 43rd in the 200 in 35.66, 23rd in the 400 in 1:18.48 and 24th in long jump at 9-9.
In boys JV field events, Gavin placed ninth in long jump at 15-11 and second in triple jump at 36-1. Joshua was ninth in JV high jump at 4-10, while Max placed 10th at 4-8. In the throws, Abi Gonzalez took 14th in JV shot put at 30-4 and 25th in JV discus at 55-6. Jackson Stover placed 23rd in JV shot put at 26-7 and 15th in JV discus at 64-9. Steiger Jacobsen finished 14th in JV discus at 65-1, and Isaac Bolton was 23rd in JV discus at 59-6 while also taking 14th in JV long jump at 14-3.
The girls were even more prominent near the top of the results. Senior Karisa Walborn led the way by winning the varsity 100-meter hurdles in 18.53, then placing second in varsity long jump at 15-3, third in varsity triple jump at 32-0, and fourth in varsity high jump at 4-6. That made Karisa one of the team’s most productive athletes of the meet.
The team also picked up first place in another girls event when junior Julia Spears won the varsity long jump at 15-8. Julia’s mark gave the Lynx the event title, while Karisa made it a one-two finish at the top of the standings.
In girls distance races, the team earned several high finishes. Senior Amanda Mabie placed third in the varsity 400 in 1:09.12 and later took third in the varsity 3200 with a personal-best 13:57.12. Senior Katelyn Copper finished seventh in the varsity 1600 in 6:12.51, while senior Eliana Feather placed fifth in the varsity 800 in 2:57.80 and eighth in the varsity 1600 in 6:36.74.
The girls also showed range in the sprints and hurdles. Junior Macey Layfield was 27th in the varsity 100 in 16.04 and then placed third in varsity shot put with a personal-best 29-3. Senior Elsa Burke finished 29th in the varsity 100 in 16.50, ninth in the varsity 100 hurdles in 23.85, and tied for 16th in varsity shot put at 21-1. Senior Zoe Newton added her sixth-place finish in the varsity 100 hurdles in 21.81.
In the throws, senior Apple Bolton was one of the top field-event performers, finishing second in varsity discus with 88-9 and second in varsity high jump at 4-8. Senior Katie Schneider placed 16th in varsity shot put at 21-1 and ninth in varsity discus at 66-3.
The girls JV team also put together several strong finishes. Sophomore Taylee Aars won the JV long jump at 14-7 and then placed second in JV triple jump at 30-3. Freshman Gabriella Jarvis took seventh in the JV 100 in 14.41 and fourth in the JV 200 in 30.36. Sophomore Clover Bailey was 11th in the JV 100 in 14.49 and ninth in the JV 200 in 31.02.
The girls JV relay team of Clover, Taylee, Maggie Boian, and Gabriella placed fourth in the 4×100 relay in 55.96. Maggie also finished 26th in the JV 100 in 15.28 and tied for eighth in JV long jump at 12-11, while sophomore Serina Rogers placed 14th in the JV 200 in 31.95, fifth in the JV 800 in 2:56.97, and tied for eighth in JV long jump at 12-11.
Additional girls JV results included freshman Charlie Jonsson, 41st in the 100 in 16.60; freshman Addison Hutts, 47th in the 100 in 17.24 and 38th in the 200 in 36.89; freshman Allison Ward, 49th in the 100 in 20.34 and 40th in the 200 in 45.34; sophomore Emily Knoch, 20th in the JV 800 in 3:17.15; and freshman Emery Dyer, who cleared 3-6 in JV high jump for 12th and placed fifth in JV triple jump at 25-0.5.
In the girls JV throws, sophomore Daisy Kammerer placed sixth in shot put at 22-4 and ninth in discus at 59-6, while freshman Brielle Balint took eighth in shot put at 21-4 and 19th in discus at 44-2.
Overall, CORE’s running programs continue to prove to be the school’s strong suit in athletics.
