CORE Butte softball went 0-4 at the Biggs Tournament across games on Mar. 26 and Mar. 28, falling to Loyalton, Weed, Trinity, and Fall River as the team’s record moved to 0-10 on the season. All games were located at Biggs High School.
On Thursday, Mar. 26, CORE opened the tournament with a 20-4 loss to Loyalton. The Grizzlies scored early with eight runs in each of the first two innings to take control.
In this game, junior Mara Gonzalez led CORE’s offense. She made 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs, and two stolen bases. Sophomore Jody Beckley also finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run, and a stolen base, while freshman Layla Chapman and senior Hazel England each added hits.
Later that day, CORE played its closest game of the tournament in a 15-12 loss to Weed. The Lynx jumped out to a fast start, scoring nine runs in the first inning, but Weed made five runs in the second and six more in the third to take the lead.
Senior Emma Bowles led this offense with a 2-for-3, three runs, and scoring once. Sophomore Jody Beckley added another strong game, going 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base. Junior Mara Gonzalez and sophomore Tenli McCord each contributed multiple hits and RBIs as CORE totaled 12 hits in the game.
On Saturday, March 28, CORE returned to tournament play but fell 12-6 to Trinity. The Wolves built an early lead with eight runs in the first inning, and although CORE responded with a five-run third inning, it was not enough to close the gap.
CORE closed the tournament with a 16-5 loss to Fall River later that day. The Bulldogs scored 12 runs in the second inning to break the game open. CORE recorded seven hits in the game but committed six errors defensively.
Across the four games, CORE showed offensive potential with multiple double-digit runs and consistent performances from Mara, Jody, and Emma, but early deficits and defensive struggles proved difficult to overcome.
